English Translation

It was narrated from Sa'd (رضي الله عنه) who said: I passed by Uthman ibn Affan in the mosque and greeted him with salam. He looked at me fully but did not return my greeting. So I went to Umar ibn al-Khattab, the Commander of the Believers, and told him. Umar sent for Uthman and asked him about it. Uthman said: 'I did not do that.' Sa'd said: 'Yes, you did.' They continued until they swore oaths. Then Uthman remembered and said: 'Yes, I seek Allah's forgiveness and repent to Him. You passed by me while I was reflecting on something I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. By Allah, I did not intend to ignore you. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: I know words that no servant says sincerely from his heart except that the gates of Heaven are opened for him: La ilaha illallah (there is no god but Allah).'
