حَدَّثَنَا عَارِمٌ وَعَفَّانُ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا مُعْتَمِرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ قَالَ عَفَّانُ فِي حَدِيثِهِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عُثْمَانَ أَنَّهُ حَدَّثَهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ أَنَّ أَصْحَابَ الصُّفَّةِ كَانُوا أُنَاسًا فُقَرَاءَ وَأَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ مَرَّةً مَنْ كَانَ عِنْدَهُ طَعَامُ اثْنَيْنِ فَلْيَذ
ْهَبْ بِثَالِثٍ وَقَالَ عَفَّانُ بِثَلَاثَةٍ وَمَنْ كَانَ عِنْدَهُ طَعَامُ أَرْبَعَةٍ فَلْيَذْهَبْ بِخَامِسٍ سَادِسٍ أَوْ كَمَا قَالَ وَأَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ جَاءَ بِثَلَاثَةٍ وَانْطَلَقَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِعَشَرَةٍ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ بِثَلَاثَةٍ قَالَ عَفَّانُ بِسَادِسٍ

English Translation
'Arim and 'Affan said: Mu'tamir ibn Sulayman narrated to us. 'Affan said in his version: He said: I heard my father say: Abu 'Uthman narrated to us that 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr (رضي الله عنهما) narrated to him that the People of the Suffah were poor folk, and that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ once said: 'Whoever has food for two, let him take a third,' and 'Affan said, 'let him take three,' 'and whoever has food for four, let him take a fifth or sixth,' or as he said. Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) brought three, and the Prophet ﷺ took ten. And Abu Bakr took three. 'Affan said: a sixth.
