He said: 'This sword is not yours nor mine. Put it down.' So I put it down and came back, saying: 'Perhaps it will be given to someone who has not done what I have done.' A man came and said: 'Stand, the Prophet ﷺ calls you.' I went hoping he would give it to me. He said: 'You asked me for the sword but it was not mine to give. Now it has been given to me to grant, so take it.' Then the verse was revealed: 'They ask you about the spoils of war' (al-Anfal 8:1).

Shall I give two-thirds of my wealth in charity?' — and Sufyan once said: 'Shall I give all my wealth in charity?' — He said: 'No.' I said: 'Then two-thirds?' He said: 'No.' I said: 'Then half?' He said: 'No.' I said: 'Then one-third?' He said: 'One-third, and one-third is much. For you to leave your heirs wealthy is better than to leave them destitute, begging from people. You will never spend anything seeking the Face of Allah except that you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel of food you raise to your wife's mouth.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, will I be left behind from my emigration?' He said: 'You will never be left behind after me and do a deed seeking the Face of Allah except that it will increase you in rank and degree. Perhaps you will be left behind so that some people will benefit from you and others will be harmed by you. O Allah, complete for my Companions their emigration and do not turn them back on their heels. But the wretched one is Sa'd ibn Khawlah' — he felt sorry for him that he died in Makkah.

Mus'ab ibn Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that four verses were revealed concerning my father. My father said: 'I obtained a sword and said: O Messenger of Allah, grant it to me as extra spoils. He said: Put it back. I said: O Messenger of Allah, grant it to me — am I to be treated like one who has no worth? He said: Put it back where you took it from. Then the verse was revealed: They ask you about the spoils of war. He said: And in Ibn Mas'ud's recitation it was likewise: Say, the spoils of war.' And his mother said: 'Does not Allah command you to maintain ties of kinship and be dutiful to parents? By Allah, I will not eat food nor drink until you disbelieve in Muhammad.' She would refuse to eat until they would pry open her mouth with a stick and pour drink into it. Shu'bah said: And I think he said: and food. Then the verse was revealed: And We have enjoined upon man goodness to his parents; his mother carried him in weakness upon weakness — and he recited until: for what you used to do. And the Prophet ﷺ visited me while I was ill. I said: O Messenger of Allah, shall I bequeath all my wealth? He forbade me. I said: Half? He said: No. I said: One-third? He was silent, and people adopted that. And a man from the Ansar prepared food, and they ate and drank and became intoxicated from wine — and that was before it was prohibited. They gathered there and boasted. The Ansar said: The Ansar are better. The Muhajirun said: The Muhajirun are better. Then a man struck Sa'd with the jawbone of a camel and split his nose. So Sa'd's nose was split, and the verse was revealed: O you who believe, wine and gambling — until His saying: Will you not then desist?
