English Translation

Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (رضي الله عنه) said: I fell severely ill in Makkah during the year of the Conquest, to the point that I was on the verge of death. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to visit me, and I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I have much wealth and no one inherits from me except my daughter. Shall I give two-thirds of my wealth in charity?' — and Sufyan once said: 'Shall I give all my wealth in charity?' — He said: 'No.' I said: 'Then two-thirds?' He said: 'No.' I said: 'Then half?' He said: 'No.' I said: 'Then one-third?' He said: 'One-third, and one-third is much. For you to leave your heirs wealthy is better than to leave them destitute, begging from people. You will never spend anything seeking the Face of Allah except that you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel of food you raise to your wife's mouth.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, will I be left behind from my emigration?' He said: 'You will never be left behind after me and do a deed seeking the Face of Allah except that it will increase you in rank and degree. Perhaps you will be left behind so that some people will benefit from you and others will be harmed by you. O Allah, complete for my Companions their emigration and do not turn them back on their heels. But the wretched one is Sa'd ibn Khawlah' — he felt sorry for him that he died in Makkah.
