English Translation

It was narrated from Sa'd ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه) who said: 'O Messenger of Allah, Allah has cured me through the polytheists [by allowing me to kill them in battle]. Grant me this sword.' He said: 'This sword is not yours nor mine. Put it down.' So I put it down and came back, saying: 'Perhaps it will be given to someone who has not done what I have done.' A man came and said: 'Stand, the Prophet ﷺ calls you.' I went hoping he would give it to me. He said: 'You asked me for the sword but it was not mine to give. Now it has been given to me to grant, so take it.' Then the verse was revealed: 'They ask you about the spoils of war' (al-Anfal 8:1).
