حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحٌ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ أَخْبَرَنِي جَعْفَرُ بْنُ خَالِدِ ابْنِ سَارَّةَ أَنَّ أَبَاهُ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ لَوْ رَأَيْتَنِي وَقُثَمَ وَعُبَيْدَ اللَّهِ ابْنَيْ عَبَّاسٍ وَنَحْنُ صِبْيَانٌ نَلْعَبُ إِذْ مَرَّ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى دَابَّةٍ فَقَالَ ارْفَعُوا هَذَا إِلَيَّ قَالَ فَحَمَلَنِي أَمَامَهُ وَقَالَ لِقُثَمَ ارْفَعُوا هَذَا إِلَيَّ فَجَعَلَهُ وَرَاءَهُ وَكَانَ عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ أَحَب
َّ إِلَى عَبَّاسٍ مِنْ قُثَمَ فَمَا اسْتَحَى مِنْ عَمِّهِ أَنْ حَمَلَ قُثَمًا وَتَرَكَهُ قَالَ ثُمَّ مَسَحَ عَلَى رَأْسِي ثَلَاثًا وَقَالَ كُلَّمَا مَسَحَ اللَّهُمَّ اخْلُفْ جَعْفَرًا فِي وَلَدِهِ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِعَبْدِ اللَّهِ مَا فَعَلَ قُثَمُ قَالَ اسْتُشْهِدَ قَالَ قُلْتُ اللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِالْخَيْرِ وَرَسُولُهُ بِالْخَيْرِ قَالَ أَجَلْ

English Translation
Rawh narrated to us, Ibn Jurayj said: Ja'far ibn Khalid ibn Sarrah informed me that his father informed him that 'Abdullah ibn Ja'far (رضي الله عنهما) said: 'If you had seen me, Qutham, and 'Ubaydullah, the two sons of 'Abbas, while we were boys playing, the Prophet ﷺ passed by on a riding animal and said: Lift this one up to me. So he placed me in front of him. Then he said about Qutham: Lift this one up to me, and he placed him behind him. 'Ubaydullah was dearer to 'Abbas than Qutham, yet the Prophet ﷺ was not shy before his uncle in carrying Qutham and leaving him. Then he stroked my head three times, each time saying: O Allah, be a successor to Ja'far in his child.' He said: I said to 'Abdullah: What happened to Qutham? He said: He was martyred. I said: Allah and His Messenger know best about goodness. He said: Indeed.
