حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْيَمَانِ أَنْبَأَنَا شُعَيْبٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ أَخْبَرَنِي مَالِكُ بْنُ أَوْسِ بْنِ الْحَدَثَانِ النَّصْرِيُّ أَنَّ عُمَرَ دَعَاهُ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ قَالَ فَبَيْنَا أَنَا عِنْدَهُ إِذْ جَاءَ حَاجِبُهُ يَرْفَأُ فَقَالَ هَلْ لَكَ فِي عُثْمَانَ وَعَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ وَالزُّبَيْرِ وَسَعْدٍ يَسْتَأْذِنُونَ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَأَدْخَلَهُمْ فَلَبِثَ قَلِيلًا ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَقَالَ هَلْ لَكَ فِي عَلِيٍّ وَعَبَّاسٍ يَسْتَأْذِنَانِ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَأَذِنَ لَهُمَا فَلَمَّا دَخَلَا قَالَ عَبَّاسٌ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ اقْضِ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ هَذَا لَعَلِيٍّ وَهُمَا يَخْتَصِمَانِ فِي الصَّوَافِ الَّتِي أَفَاءَ اللَّهُ عَلَى رَسُولِهِ مِنْ أَمْوَالِ بَنِي النَّضِيرِ فَقَالَ الرَّهْطُ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ اقْضِ بَيْنَهُمَا وَأَرِحْ أَحَدَهُمَا مِنْ الْآخَرِ قَالَ عُمَرُ اتَّئِدُوا أُنَاشِدُكُمْ بِاللَّهِ الَّذِي بِإِذْنِهِ تَقُومُ السَّمَاءُ وَالْأَرْضُ هَلْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَا نُورَثُ مَا تَرَكْنَا صَدَقَةٌ يُرِيدُ نَفْسَهُ قَالُوا قَدْ قَالَ ذَلِكَ فَأَقْبَلَ عُمَرُ عَلَى عَلِيٍّ وَعَلَى الْعَبَّاسِ فَقَالَ أَنْشُدُكُمَا بِاللَّهِ أَتَعْلَمَانِ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ ذَلِكَ قَالَا نَعَ
مْ قَالَ فَإِنِّي أُحَدِّثُكُمْ عَنْ هَذَا الْأَمْرِ أَنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ كَانَ خَصَّ رَسُولَهُ فِي هَذَا الْفَيْءِ بِشَيْءٍ لَمْ يُعْطِهِ أَحَدًا غَيْرَهُ فَقَالَ { وَمَا أَفَاءَ اللَّهُ عَلَى رَسُولِهِ مِنْهُمْ فَمَا أَوْجَفْتُمْ إِلَى قَدِيرٌ } فَكَانَتْ هَذِهِ خَاصَّةً لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثُمَّ وَاللَّهِ مَا احْتَازَهَا دُونَكُمْ وَلَا اسْتَأْثَرَ بِهَا عَلَيْكُمْ لَقَدْ أَعْطَاكُمُوهَا وَبَثَّهَا فِيكُمْ حَتَّى بَقِيَ مِنْهَا هَذَا الْمَالُ فَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُنْفِقُ عَلَى أَهْلِهِ نَفَقَةَ سَنَتِهِمْ مِنْ هَذَا الْمَالِ ثُمَّ يَأْخُذُ مَا بَقِيَ فَيَجْعَلُهُ مَجْعَلَ مَالِ اللَّهِ فَعَمِلَ بِذَلِكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَيَاتَهُ ثُمَّ تُوُفِّيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ أَنَا وَلِيُّ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَبَضَهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَعَمِلَ فِيهِ بِمَا عَمِلَ فِيهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

English Translation
Abu al-Yaman informed us, Shu'ayb informed us, from al-Zuhri, Malik ibn Aws ibn al-Hadathan al-Nasri informed me that 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) summoned him. He mentioned the hadith. He said: While I was with him, his chamberlain Yarfa' came and said: 'Will you receive 'Uthman, 'Abd al-Rahman, al-Zubayr, and Sa'd? They are requesting permission.' He said: 'Yes, let them in.' After a short while he came again and said: 'Will you receive 'Ali and al-'Abbas? They are requesting permission.' He said: 'Yes.' He admitted them. When they entered, al-'Abbas said: 'O Commander of the Believers, judge between me and this one,' referring to 'Ali. They were disputing about the estates that Allah had granted as fay' to His Messenger from the properties of Banu al-Nadir. The group said: 'O Commander of the Believers, judge between them and relieve one from the other.' 'Umar said: 'Wait. I adjure you by Allah, by Whose permission the heaven and earth stand: do you know that the Prophet ﷺ said: We are not inherited from; what we leave behind is charity, referring to himself?' They said: 'He did say that.' 'Umar turned to 'Ali and al-'Abbas and said: 'I adjure you both by Allah: do you know that the Prophet ﷺ said that?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Then let me tell you about this matter. Allah (عز وجل) had singled out His Messenger regarding this fay' with something He gave to no one else. He said: {And what Allah restored to His Messenger from them, you did not spur for it any horse...} to {...Capable}. This was exclusively for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then, by Allah, he did not hoard it to the exclusion of you, nor did he keep it for himself over you. He gave it to you and distributed it among you until this wealth remained from it. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to spend on his family a year's provision from this wealth, then take what remained and place it where the wealth of Allah is placed. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did this throughout his life. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, and Abu Bakr said: I am the guardian of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Abu Bakr took possession of it and dealt with it as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had dealt with it.'
