English Translation

Ya'qub narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, Yahya ibn Abi al-Ash'ath narrated to me, from Isma'il ibn Iyas ibn 'Afif al-Kindi, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: "I was a merchant, and I came for Hajj and went to al-'Abbas ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib to buy some goods from him, as he was a merchant. By Allah, while I was with him at Mina, a man came out from a tent near him and looked at the sun. When he saw it had passed its zenith, he stood to pray. Then a woman came out from that same tent and stood behind him praying. Then a boy nearing puberty came out from that tent and stood with him praying. I said to al-'Abbas: 'Who is this, O 'Abbas?' He said: 'This is Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib, my nephew.' I said: 'Who is this woman?' He said: 'This is his wife, Khadijah bint Khuwaylid.' I said: 'Who is this young man?' He said: 'This is 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, his cousin.' I said: 'What is this that he is doing?' He said: 'He is praying. He claims that he is a prophet, and no one has followed him in his affair except his wife and this young cousin of his. He claims that the treasures of Khosrau and Caesar will be opened for him.' 'Afif, who was the cousin of al-Ash'ath ibn Qays, used to say after he had accepted Islam and his Islam was good: 'If only Allah had granted me Islam that day, I would have been the third along with 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (رضي الله عنه).'"
