English Translation
Yahya narrated from Shu'bah, Abu Jamrah narrated to me — and Ibn Ja'far said: Shu'bah narrated to us, from Abu Jamrah, who said: I heard Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) say: When the delegation of 'Abd al-Qays came to Madinah to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said: 'Who is the delegation?' — or he said: 'the people?' They said: 'Rabi'ah.' He said: 'Welcome to the delegation' — or he said: 'the people' — 'without disgrace or regret.' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we have come from a distant journey, and between us and you is this tribe of the disbelievers of Mudar. We cannot come to you except in a sacred month. So instruct us with something by which we may enter Paradise and inform those behind us.' They also asked him about drinks. He commanded them with four things and forbade them from four. He commanded them with belief in Allah and said: 'Do you know what belief in Allah is?' They said: 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said: 'The testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, establishing prayer, giving zakat, fasting Ramadan, and giving the khums (fifth) of the war spoils.' And he forbade them from al-dubba' (gourd vessels), al-hantam (green-glazed jars), al-naqir (hollowed-out tree trunks), and al-muzaffat (pitch-lined vessels).' He said: 'And sometimes he said: al-muqayyar (tar-coated vessels).' He said: 'Memorize them and inform those behind you.'
