Hadith #590

English Translation

Mu'adh ibn Mu'adh narrated to us, Hajib ibn 'Umar narrated to us, my uncle al-Hakam ibn al-A'raj narrated to me, who said: I came to Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) while he was reclining near Zamzam. I sat with him and he was an excellent companion. I said: "Tell me about the Day of 'Ashura." He said: "About which aspect of it are you asking?" I said: "About its fast." He said: "When you see the crescent of Muharram, count, and when you wake on the ninth day, fast that day." I said: "Is that how Muhammad ﷺ used to fast it?" He said: "Yes."
