حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا عَنْ دَاوُدَ عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ قَالَتْ قُرَيْشٌ لِلْيَهُودِ أَعْطُونَا شَيْئًا نَسْأَلُ عَنْهُ هَذَا الرَّجُلَ فَقَالُوا سَلُوهُ عَنْ الرُّوحِ فَسَأَلُوهُ فَنَزَلَتْ { وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنْ الرُّوحِ قُلْ الرُّو
حُ مِنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّي وَمَا أُوتِيتُمْ مِنْ الْعِلْمِ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا } قَالُوا أُوتِينَا عِلْمًا كَثِيرًا أُوتِينَا التَّوْرَاةَ وَمَنْ أُوتِيَ التَّوْرَاةَ فَقَدْ أُوتِيَ خَيْرًا كَثِيرًا قَالَ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ { قُلْ لَوْ كَانَ الْبَحْرُ مِدَادًا لِكَلِمَاتِ رَبِّي لَنَفِدَ الْبَحْرُ }

English Translation
Qutaybah ibn Sa'id narrated to us, Yahya ibn Zakariyya narrated to us, from Dawud, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) who said: The Quraysh said to the Jews: "Give us something to ask this man about." They said: "Ask him about the soul." So they asked him, and it was revealed: {And they ask you about the soul. Say: The soul is from the affair of my Lord, and you have been given of knowledge only a little} [al-Isra' 17:85]. They said: "We have been given abundant knowledge; we were given the Torah, and whoever is given the Torah has been given abundant good." So Allah (عز وجل) revealed: {Say: If the sea were ink for the words of my Lord, the sea would be exhausted} [al-Kahf 18:109].
