Yunus and 'Affan narrated to us, Hammad, meaning Ibn Salamah, narrated to us, from 'Ali ibn Zayd. 'Affan said: 'Ali ibn Zayd informed us, from Yusuf ibn Mihran, from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما), that a man came to 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) and said: "A woman came to pledge allegiance, so I brought her into a side room and did everything with her short of intercourse." He said: "Woe to you! Perhaps her husband is away in the path of Allah?" He said: "Indeed." He said: "Go to Abu Bakr and ask him." So he went to Abu Bakr and asked him, and Abu Bakr said: "Perhaps her husband is away in the path of Allah?" He said the same as 'Umar. Then the man went to the Prophet ﷺ and told him the same. He said: "Perhaps her husband is away in the path of Allah?" Then the Quran was revealed: {And establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at the approach of the night. Indeed, good deeds drive away evil deeds} [11:114] to the end of the verse. The man said: "O Messenger of Allah, is this specifically for me or for all people generally?" 'Umar struck his chest with his hand and said: "No, and no delight of the eye! Rather, it is for all people generally." the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "'Umar has spoken the truth."
