وعن عبد الله بن عمرو بن العاص رضي الله عنهما
أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: "أربع من كن فيه كان منافقا خالصاً. ومن كانت فيه خصلة منهن كانت فيه خصلة من النفاق حتى يدعها : إذا اؤتمن خان ، وإذا حدث كذب، وإذا عاهد غدر، وإذا خاصم فجر"((متفق عليه)).

English Translation
'Abdullah bin 'Amr bin Al-'as (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Four are the qualities which, when found in a person, make him a sheer hypocrite, and one who possesses one of them, possesses one characteristic of hypocrisy until he abandons it. These are: When he is entrusted with something, he betrays trust; when he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he acts treacherously; and when he argues, he behaves in a very imprudent, insulting manner.".

This hadith identifies four qualities of the complete hypocrite: lying when speaking, betraying when entrusted, breaking promises, and transgressing when arguing. This hadith adds 'transgression when disputing' (fajur fil-khusuma) to the three signs given in the previous hadith. Ibn Hajar explains the four qualities together paint a portrait of a person who sees all human interaction as a means to their own ends — they will say whatever serves them (lying), take whatever they can (betrayal), commit to nothing (broken promises), and attack ruthlessly when challenged (transgression). Ibn Uthaymin notes that 'fajur in disputing' refers specifically to knowingly arguing for a falsehood, making false accusations, or using underhanded methods to win an argument — this is among the most dangerous qualities because it corrupts justice. Scholars note that having even one of these four qualities is a form of hypocrisy, and a Muslim should work actively to eliminate it.
