Anas (ra) reported that whenever the Prophet ﷺ said something, he would repeat it three times so the meaning would be fully understood. This hadith is placed here by Imam al-Nawawi to illustrate the Prophet's teaching method (manhaj al-ta'lim). Ibn Uthaymin explains that the Prophet ﷺ understood human psychology — important information needs repetition to be retained and understood. The number three is noted: not once (possibly missed), not more than three (tedious), but exactly three times. This shows wisdom in pedagogy. Ibn Allan notes that repetition also signals emphasis: when the Prophet ﷺ repeated something three times, it was a signal to listeners that this was particularly important. Modern educators call this spaced repetition. The hadith also teaches that clarity of communication is itself a virtue and responsibility for those who teach.
