Shaqiq reports that Ibn Mas'ud (ra) used to preach to the people only once a week, limiting himself so as not to bore or burden them. When someone suggested he increase the frequency, Ibn Mas'ud replied that he refrains for their sake and does not want to weary them with too much speech. Ibn Uthaymin explains that this is wisdom in dawah and teaching: people's attention, motivation, and receptiveness are limited resources. Overloading an audience with too much religious content at once leads to fatigue and eventually disengagement. The sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ was similarly to teach at intervals, not constantly. Ibn Allan comments that this hadith is particularly relevant for Islamic educators, preachers, and khatibs — the effectiveness of a lecture or sermon is better measured by impact and retention than by length or frequency. Quality and relevance matter more than quantity.
