Badi az-Zaman Abu al-Izz ibn Ismail ibn al-Razzaz al-Jazari (fl. late 6th - early 7th century AH / late 12th - early 13th century CE) was the greatest mechanical engineer of the medieval world. His monumental work Kitab fi Marifat al-Hiyal al-Handasiyya (Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices), completed in 602 AH (1206 CE), described fifty mechanical devices of remarkable sophistication and stands as the most comprehensive treatise on mechanical engineering produced in the pre-modern era.

Life

Almost nothing is known of al-Jazari's early life, including his birth date and place. He served as chief engineer to the Artuqid rulers of Diyar Bakr (present-day southeastern Turkey) for at least 25 years, under three successive sultans. His surname al-Jazari indicates he came from al-Jazira, the region of Upper Mesopotamia (present-day northern Iraq and northeastern Syria).

He died in approximately 602 AH (1206 CE), though some sources put his death slightly later. His career coincided with a period of relative stability and cultural patronage in the Artuqid principality, which enabled sustained engineering work.

The Book of Ingenious Mechanical Devices

The Kitab was commissioned by Sultan Nasir ad-Din Mahmud, the Artuqid ruler, who asked al-Jazari to record all the devices he had created during his career. The result is an extraordinary illustrated manual describing fifty devices in six categories:

Water clocks and candle clocks. Al-Jazari designed elaborate water-powered clocks that displayed the time through moving figures, automata, and astronomical indicators. His monumental elephant clock, incorporating automata from multiple cultural traditions (an elephant, a serpent, a phoenix, and figures in Chinese, Indian, Greek, and Egyptian dress), was a symbol of the cosmopolitan Islamic world.

Vessels and figures for drinking sessions. Elaborate dispensing devices for wine and water, including a hand-washing automaton that poured water when a figure's hand was moved.

Pitchers and basins for bloodletting and other purposes. Medical equipment and graduated vessels.

Fountains and perpetual flutes. Musical automata and decorative water features, including a programmable music machine powered by a rotating drum with pegs that could be adjusted to change the melody.

Water-raising machines. Pumps and water-lifting devices, including the double-acting reciprocating pump with suction pipes — one of his most important engineering innovations.

Miscellaneous devices. Including combination locks and a door-opening mechanism that worked automatically when a boat landed.

Key Engineering Innovations

Al-Jazari described and illustrated several mechanisms that were genuinely novel or that represent the first clear documentary evidence of their use:

The crankshaft. Al-Jazari's twin-cylinder water pump employed a crank mechanism that converted rotary to reciprocal motion — a fundamental mechanical principle. While earlier examples may have existed, his illustration is among the earliest clear depictions.

The double-acting piston pump with suction and delivery pipes. This design, which operates continuously in both the upstroke and downstroke, is the basis of all modern reciprocating pumps.

Segmental gears. Used in his water-raising machines.

The camshaft. Used in his automata to create programmed sequences of movement.

Conical valve plugs. Precisely machined to seal water channels.

The precision of al-Jazari's work implies sophisticated metalworking and machining techniques. He describes drilling a cylindrical bore precisely enough to create a working piston — a remarkable feat for medieval technology.

The Illustrated Manuscripts

Al-Jazari's treatise survives in numerous manuscript copies, most of which are heavily illustrated. The miniature paintings in these manuscripts are among the finest examples of medieval Islamic book illustration, showing the devices in operation with their mechanisms visible. Major manuscript copies are held in Istanbul, Cairo, and Oxford.

Legacy

Al-Jazari's engineering work stands as the apex of medieval mechanical ingenuity. His pump designs were not merely theoretical — water-raising machines of the types he described were in practical use in irrigation throughout the medieval Islamic world.

His work influenced European engineers through transmission of Islamic mechanical knowledge in Spain and Sicily during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The mechanisms he documented — crankshafts, camshafts, connecting rods — are fundamental to all mechanical engineering that followed.

Modern engineers and historians of technology consider the Book of Ingenious Mechanical Devices one of the most important works in the history of engineering. Al-Jazari has been called the father of modern engineering and robotics, though such designations can oversimplify a complex history of transmission.
