Diya ad-Din Abu Muhammad Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Baytar al-Malaqi (593-646 AH / 1197-1248 CE) was the greatest botanist and pharmacologist of the medieval world. His monumental Kitab al-Jami li-Mufradat al-Adwiya wal-Aghdhiya (The Complete Compendium of Simple Drugs and Foods) catalogued over 1,400 medicinal plants, foods, and drugs — the most comprehensive pharmaceutical reference work of the medieval period.

Life

Ibn al-Baytar was born in Malaga (Maliqah), al-Andalus, around 593 AH (1197 CE). His surname al-Baytar (the veterinarian) may refer to an ancestor's profession. He studied botany under Abu al-Abbas al-Nabati, a distinguished botanist in Seville who had collected plants across the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa.

Around 613 AH (1216 CE), Ibn al-Baytar left al-Andalus and undertook extensive botanical expeditions across North Africa, collecting and studying plant specimens from Morocco to Tripoli to Egypt. He eventually settled in Egypt under the Ayyubid Sultan al-Kamil, who appointed him chief herbalist (ra'is al-ashab). He also collected plants in Syria and Anatolia during his time in the Levant, where he served under subsequent Ayyubid rulers.

He died in Damascus in 646 AH (1248 CE).

Al-Jami li-Mufradat al-Adwiya wal-Aghdhiya

Ibn al-Baytar's masterwork is organized alphabetically and covers over 1,400 substances (plants, animals, minerals) used in medicine and diet. For each entry he provides:

  • The various names of the substance in Arabic, Greek, Persian, Berber, and other languages
  • A physical description of the plant or substance
  • Its medical and nutritional properties
  • Quotations from over 150 previous botanical and medical authors, including Greek sources (Dioscorides, Galen), Arab authors, and his own observations

What makes the work exceptional is its combination of textual erudition with firsthand field observation. Ibn al-Baytar personally collected and examined an enormous number of the plants he described, correcting errors in earlier authorities based on direct observation. He identified and named approximately 200 plants not previously described in botanical literature.

He often pointed out cases where earlier authors (including Dioscorides, the classical standard) had made errors in identifying plants or describing their properties. His willingness to correct classical authorities based on personal observation reflects the empirical tradition of Islamic science at its best.

Al-Mughni fil-Adwiya al-Mufrada

Ibn al-Baytar also wrote al-Mughni fil-Adwiya al-Mufrada (The Sufficient Work on Simple Drugs), organized by therapeutic category rather than alphabetically. This complementary organization made it more useful as a clinical reference for physicians who needed to find treatments for specific conditions.

Translations and Influence

Ibn al-Baytar's works were widely copied and used across the Islamic world from his time through the eighteenth century CE. The Jami was translated into Latin by Lucca Ghini (partially) and later more completely by other scholars. It was used in European botanical and pharmacological studies through the Renaissance period.

Modern pharmaceutical historians credit Ibn al-Baytar with advancing the standards of botanical observation and pharmaceutical scholarship significantly beyond the level of his predecessors.
