عبد الفتاح أبو غدة
Sheikh
Abdul-Fattah Abu Ghuddah (1917-1997 CE / 1336-1417 AH) was a Syrian Hanafi scholar, hadith expert, and educator born in Aleppo. He studied under the leading scholars of Syria, including Ahmad al-Kurdi, Isa al-Bayanouni, and the great hadith master Muhammad Raghib at-Tabbakh. He also studied under Muhammad Zahid al-Kawthari in Egypt, who had a profound influence on his scholarly development.
Abu Ghuddah made his most lasting contributions through his meticulous critical editions of classical hadith and scholarly works. He edited and annotated al-Ajwibah al-Fadilah of al-Laknawi, Sharh Nukhbat al-Fikar of Ibn Hajar, al-Raf wat-Takmil of al-Laknawi, Qawa'id fi Ulum al-Hadith of al-Uthmani, and dozens of other classical texts. Each edition features detailed introductions, scholarly annotations, and biographical research on the authors. He also authored original works including Safahat min Sabr al-Ulama (Pages from the Patience of Scholars), a beloved collection of inspiring stories about scholarly perseverance.
Abu Ghuddah served in the Syrian parliament and was active in Islamic education and dawah before eventually settling in Saudi Arabia. He taught at the Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University in Riyadh and King Saud University. His editorial work set a standard for precision and thoroughness in Islamic publishing, and he trained a generation of students in the art of critical manuscript editing. He passed away in Riyadh and his critical editions remain among the most reliable available for the works he edited.
