Sheikh
Abd al-Hayy ibn Fakhr ad-Din al-Hasani an-Nadwi (1286-1341 AH / 1869-1923 CE) was an Indian Islamic scholar and historian, and the father of the celebrated scholar Abu al-Hasan an-Nadwi. Born in Lucknow into a family tracing their lineage to Imam al-Hasan ibn Ali, he studied under the scholars of Lucknow and Bhopal and became a distinguished authority in Islamic biographical literature and history.
His most important work is Nuzhat al-Khawatir wa-Bahjat al-Masami' wan-Nawazir (The Walk of the Minds and the Delight of Listeners and Beholders), also known as al-I'lam bi-man fi Tarikh al-Hind min al-A'lam (Notice of the Distinguished Figures in the History of India), a comprehensive multi-volume biographical dictionary of Muslim scholars, rulers, and notable figures of the Indian subcontinent from the earliest Islamic presence there through his own era. This massive work is the most comprehensive single-authored biographical encyclopedia of the Indian subcontinent's Islamic history.
Nuzhat al-Khawatir documents thousands of figures associated with Islamic scholarship, mysticism, and public life in India, many of whom would otherwise be difficult to trace. It is an indispensable reference for the social and religious history of Islam in the Indian subcontinent.
Abd al-Hayy also taught at Nadwat al-Ulama and contributed to its development as a center of traditional Islamic scholarship with a broader literary vision. He passed away in Lucknow in 1923. His biographical encyclopedia is his most enduring scholarly legacy and remains the foundational reference for Islamic biographical history in South Asia.
