عبد الحي اللكنوي
Muhammad Abdul-Hayy ibn Muhammad Abdul-Halim al-Ansari al-Lacknawi (1848-1886 CE / 1264-1304 AH) was an Indian Hanafi scholar and hadith expert who achieved remarkable scholarly output in his short life of only thirty-nine years. Born in Lucknow into a distinguished family of scholars known as the Firangi Mahalli, he began his studies under his father and quickly demonstrated extraordinary intellectual ability.
Al-Lacknawi authored well over one hundred works in Arabic and other languages, an astonishing feat given his brief lifespan. His most important contributions include at-Taliq al-Mumajjad ala Muwatta Muhammad, a major commentary on Imam Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ash-Shaybani's recension of al-Muwatta; ar-Raf wat-Takmil fi al-Jarh wat-Ta'dil, a work on hadith narrator criticism that clarified important methodological principles; al-Fawa'id al-Bahiyyah fi Tarajim al-Hanafiyyah, biographical entries of Hanafi scholars; and al-Ajwibah al-Fadilah lil-As'ilah al-Ashrah al-Kamilah on ten important questions in hadith methodology.
Al-Lacknawi's scholarship was characterized by exceptional precision, critical thinking, and deep familiarity with both Hanafi jurisprudence and hadith sciences. He edited and annotated numerous classical works, adding valuable footnotes and corrections that later scholars have come to rely upon. Despite his youth, he was recognized as one of the foremost Hanafi scholars of his era. His premature death was a great loss to Islamic scholarship, but his prodigious output ensures his lasting influence.
