عبد الرؤوف المناوي
Imam
Zayn ad-Din Muhammad Abd ar-Ra'uf ibn Taj al-Arifin al-Munawi (952-1031 AH / 1545-1621 CE) was an Egyptian Shafi'i scholar and one of the most prolific hadith commentators of the Ottoman period. Born in Cairo, he studied under the leading scholars of al-Azhar and became a major authority in hadith sciences, jurisprudence, and Sufi thought.
Al-Munawi's most important work is Fayd al-Qadir Sharh al-Jami' as-Saghir (The Gushing Flood: Commentary on the Small Collection), a massive six-volume commentary on as-Suyuti's al-Jami' as-Saghir (a collection of short hadith texts). This work is one of the most comprehensive references for the explanation and authentication of hadiths in the format of short prophetic sayings and provides encyclopedic information on each hadith, including its legal implications, linguistic analysis, and the opinions of scholars. It is an indispensable reference in hadith commentary literature.
He also authored at-Tawqif ala Muhimmat at-Ta'arif (a comprehensive dictionary of Islamic technical terms), al-Kawakib ad-Durriyyah fi Tarjim as-Sadat as-Sufiyyah (biographies of Sufi masters), and numerous other works in hadith, biography, and Islamic sciences. His output was prolific, amounting to dozens of works.
Al-Munawi was known for combining external scholarship with inner spiritual cultivation, following the Shadiliyyah Sufi tradition. He passed away in Cairo in 1031 AH. His Fayd al-Qadir remains one of the most important references for hadith commentary and is frequently cited in scholarly works on Islamic legal traditions.
