أبو الحسن الشاذلي الفاسي
Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Abd ar-Rahman al-Fasi (1040-1096 AH / 1630-1685 CE) was a Moroccan Maliki scholar from Fez who contributed significantly to Maliki legal scholarship during the early Alawid period. He came from the prominent al-Fasi scholarly family of Fez, which produced numerous distinguished scholars across multiple generations.
Al-Fasi studied under the leading scholars of Fez and became an authority in Maliki jurisprudence, hadith, and the related Islamic sciences. He served in judicial and teaching positions in Fez and produced important scholarly works.
His most significant contribution is his work in the Maliki legal tradition, including legal opinions (fatawa) and other juristic writings that addressed the practical legal questions of his community. He was a careful and methodical jurist whose opinions reflected the mature Moroccan Maliki tradition.
The al-Fasi scholarly family of Fez is one of the most distinguished scholarly lineages in Moroccan Islamic history, with contributions spanning from the medieval period through the modern era. Abu al-Hasan Ali represents one chapter in this multi-generational scholarly tradition. He passed away in Fez in 1096 AH. While his individual fame is less than some other Moroccan scholars, his contributions to the preservation and continuation of the Maliki legal tradition in Morocco during the early Alawid period are part of the broader institutional history of Islamic scholarship in the Maghreb.
