Abd Allah ibn Dinar al-Adawi al-Madani was a Medinan tabi'i of the freed-slave class who became one of the most trusted narrators in the Medinan hadith tradition, particularly celebrated for his close association with the companion Abd Allah ibn Umar ibn al-Khattab. He was a mawla (freed client) affiliated with the family or followers of the Adawiyya lineage in Medina and spent his life in the city as a scholar and narrator.
His primary teacher and source of hadith was Ibn Umar, one of the most prolific and reliable companions of the Prophet. Ibn Umar was known for his scrupulous adherence to prophetic example in every detail of life, and those who studied under him absorbed this meticulous approach. Abd Allah ibn Dinar spent significant time in the company of Ibn Umar, learning from him directly and transmitting a large number of hadith through this chain.
The chain Abd Allah ibn Dinar โ Ibn Umar โ the Prophet is among the authentic and frequently-cited chains in the canonical hadith literature. Imam Malik ibn Anas, who was deeply attentive to the reliability of Medinan chains, included many of Abd Allah ibn Dinar's narrations in his Muwatta, which is the highest endorsement a Medinan narrator could receive. Imam al-Bukhari and Imam Muslim both included his narrations in their Sahih collections, cementing his status as a first-rank reliable narrator.
Beyond Ibn Umar, Abd Allah ibn Dinar also transmitted from Anas ibn Malik and other companions and early tabi'un. His students included Imam Malik himself, Sufyan al-Thawri, Shu'ba ibn al-Hajjaj, and other leading scholars of the following generation. This breadth of student connections ensured wide dissemination of his transmissions.
He lived in Medina throughout his life and died there around 127 AH (744โ745 CE). His reputation among the hadith critics was uniformly positive: Yahya ibn Ma'in, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, and al-Nasa'i all affirmed his reliability. His long life and his close connection to Ibn Umar made him one of the key figures through whom the Umari hadith tradition was preserved and transmitted to the compilers of the canonical collections.
The chain Abd Allah ibn Dinar โ Ibn Umar โ Prophet is particularly valuable because Ibn Umar was himself one of the most careful companions in adhering to the prophetic example. Ibn Umar famously tried to imitate every detail of the Prophet's behavior, even in things that were not legally required. His narrations were therefore highly prized because they came from someone who had paid extreme attention to the Prophet's actions and words. Abd Allah ibn Dinar, by sitting closely at Ibn Umar's feet and learning from him intensively, became one of the most reliable conduits through which this meticulous Umari tradition was transmitted to later generations.
