Ali ibn Abd al-Hayy al-Hasani, known as Abu al-Hasan al-Nadwi (1332–1420 AH / 1913–1999 CE), was one of the most influential Islamic scholars of the 20th century from India. President of the Islamic Academy in Lucknow (Nadwat al-Ulama), he wrote extensively in Arabic and Urdu on Islamic history, spirituality, and reform. His most influential work Madha Khasir al-Alam bi-Inhitat al-Muslimin (What Has the World Lost due to the Decline of Muslims?) translated into many languages and shaped the understanding of Islamic civilization's role in world history for millions of readers. He was a member of the Muslim World League's founding council.
