Abu Qilabah al-Jarmi, whose full name was Abdullah ibn Zayd al-Jarmi, was a distinguished Tabi'i scholar from Basra renowned for his broad learning, piety, and principled avoidance of sitting with rulers or being drawn into political entanglements. He traveled widely in search of hadith, journeying to Syria, the Hijaz, and other regions, and narrated from numerous companions including Anas ibn Malik, Malik ibn al-Huwayrith, Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, and others, may Allah be pleased with them all. He was known for abandoning his home in Basra and retreating to Syria partly to distance himself from the political strife of his time. Scholars of hadith praised him consistently for his reliability, precision, and integrity. He narrated on a wide range of topics including prayer, purification, punishments, and Islamic ethics. His narrations are found in all six major hadith collections and are cited extensively in classical fiqh works. He died in Syria around 104–107 AH, and his life became a model for later scholars of avoiding the corruption that comes from proximity to power.
