Abu Umama al-Bahili, may Allah be pleased with him, whose full name was Sudayy ibn Ajlan al-Bahili, was a companion of the Prophet ﷺ from the Bahila tribe who became one of the most prolific narrators of hadith among the companions of Syria. After the Islamic conquests, he settled in Homs and later Damascus, where he became the primary channel for prophetic knowledge in Greater Syria. He participated in several of the Prophet's ﷺ campaigns and devoted himself entirely to the transmission of hadith throughout his long life. He is said to have narrated the largest number of hadiths among the companions who settled in Syria, with his reports appearing across all six major hadith collections. He narrated on an exceptionally wide range of topics: prayer, Quran recitation, fasting, charity, trade, eschatology, the Dajjal, Paradise and Hell, and the proper conduct of Muslims in every sphere of life. He was deeply concerned with propagating Islamic knowledge in Syria and was known for seeking out people in markets and public places to teach them. He passed away around 86 AH, one of the last companions in Syria.
