Abu Waqid al-Laithi, may Allah be pleased with him, whose full name was al-Harith ibn Awf or, according to some scholars, Awf ibn al-Harith al-Laythi, was a companion of the Prophet ﷺ from the Layth tribe. He participated in the military expeditions of the Prophet ﷺ and was among those who witnessed the conquest of Mecca. He is known for several important narrations from the Prophet ﷺ, including a report clarifying the prohibition against cutting meat from a living animal — that any part cut from a living animal is considered a dead animal (mayta) and therefore unlawful to eat. This narration is a primary reference in Islamic law on the permissibility of meat. He also narrated reports about the rites of Hajj, rulings about things encountered during travel, and other aspects of the Sunnah. His narrations are preserved in the Muwatta of Imam Malik, the Sunan of Abu Dawud, and other collections. He settled in Medina and later Egypt and passed away around 68 AH, leaving behind narrations that became foundational references in Islamic jurisprudence.
