أحمد الغماري
Sheikh
Abu al-Fayid Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn as-Siddiq al-Ghumari (1320-1380 AH / 1902-1960 CE) was a Moroccan hadith scholar renowned for his extraordinary memory and vast knowledge of the hadith literature. Born in Tangier into the distinguished Ghumari scholarly family, the elder brother of Abdullah al-Ghumari, he studied under his father and other scholars before traveling widely in pursuit of hadith knowledge.
Ahmad al-Ghumari was one of the most knowledgeable people of his era in identifying spurious, weak, and fabricated hadiths. He had an encyclopedic command of the chains of transmission and could identify forgeries with remarkable precision. He held the Ash'ari theological position and the Maliki madhhab but was known for voicing sharp criticisms of other scholars, sometimes controversially.
His most significant work is al-Mudawi li-Ilal al-Jami' as-Saghir wa Sharhayhil-Munawi (a critical analysis of the hadiths in as-Suyuti's al-Jami' as-Saghir), a monumental work demonstrating his technical expertise in hadith criticism. He also authored Fath al-Malik al-Ali bil-Mushayya'ah Muwatta' Malik ala Tashih Hadith Bab al-Ahkam wal-Balighi. His willingness to challenge widely accepted hadith gradings and his direct criticism of other scholars made him a controversial but undeniably significant figure in 20th-century hadith scholarship.
Ahmad al-Ghumari passed away in Tangier in 1960. He is remembered as a sharp-minded hadith critic whose technical contributions to the field remain valuable, even when his personal manner was considered abrasive by contemporaries.
