Abu Yaqub Yusuf ibn Yahya al-Qurashi al-Misri, known as al-Buwayti (160โ231 AH), was the foremost student of Imam al-Shafi'i in Egypt and his appointed successor in transmitting his school. When al-Shafi'i died, al-Buwayti led his teaching circle in Egypt. He was imprisoned during the Mihna (the Mu'tazilite inquisition) under Caliph al-Wathiq for refusing to declare that the Quran was created. He died in prison in Baghdad as a result of mistreatment, becoming one of the martyrs of the Sunni cause. He transmitted al-Shafi'i's school and his abridgment al-Mukhtasar is a foundational Shafi'i text.
