Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Muhammad al-Isfarayini (c. 338-418 AH / 950-1027 CE) was a leading Ash'ari theologian and Shafii jurist based in Nishapur, recognized as one of the most important scholars of his era in both theology and jurisprudence. Born in Isfarayin in Khorasan, he studied in Baghdad, Nishapur, and other centers of learning before returning to establish himself as a foremost authority in Nishapur's intellectual life.
Al-Isfarayini was a contemporary of al-Baqillani in Baghdad, and together they represent the second generation of Ash'ari theologians who refined and expanded the school's methodology. While al-Baqillani was the master systematizer, al-Isfarayini focused on establishing the Ash'ari tradition in the eastern Islamic lands, particularly in Khorasan and Transoxiana. His teaching circle in Nishapur was attended by hundreds of students and served as a counterweight to Mutazili and other theological trends in the region.
He is reported to have authored works on theology and usul al-fiqh, though few have survived in their original form. His theological positions are preserved primarily through the writings of his students and later Ash'ari scholars. He died in Nishapur in 418 AH (1027 CE). His legacy lies primarily in establishing Nishapur as a major center of Ash'ari scholarship, paving the way for the later achievements of al-Juwayni and al-Ghazali in the same city.
