Biography

Jamal al-Din Abd al-Rahim al-Isnawi (704–772 AH / 1305–1370 CE) was a leading Shafi'i jurist and legal theorist of 8th-century AH Egypt. His most important work, al-Tamhid fi Takhrij al-Furu' ala al-Usul, is a landmark study connecting specific legal rulings (furu') to their theoretical foundations (usul), an approach that influenced subsequent legal theory. He also wrote al-Nihayah al-Sul fi Sharh Minhaj al-Wusul and al-Muhimmat, an addendum to al-Rafi'i and al-Nawawi's works. He was the chief teacher at al-Azhar and trained prominent scholars including al-Subki.
