Biography

Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Shirbini al-Qahiri (906–977 AH), known as al-Khatib al-Shirbini, was a leading Egyptian Shafi'i jurist of the 10th century AH. His major work, Mughni al-Muhtaj ila Ma'rifat Ma'ani Alfaz al-Minhaj, is the most widely used commentary on Imam al-Nawawi's Minhaj al-Talibin. It is distinguished for its balance between detail and accessibility, making it the preferred teaching text in Shafi'i faculties and Islamic universities. He also wrote al-Iqna' (a condensed Shafi'i fiqh text) and Tafsir al-Siraj al-Munir. He taught at al-Azhar and trained many prominent scholars.
