Biography

Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Maqqari al-Tilimisani (986–1041 AH / 1578–1632 CE) was a Moroccan-Algerian scholar and historian who wrote the most important historical work on Islamic Spain. His Nafh al-Tib min Ghusn al-Andalus al-Ratib (The Fragrant Breeze from the Moist Branch of al-Andalus) is an encyclopedic history of Islamic Spain covering its scholars, poets, rulers, and cultural achievements. Born in Tlemcen (Algeria), he worked in Morocco and Egypt and is considered the last great historian of al-Andalus. The work is invaluable for understanding Andalusian Islamic civilization.
