المباركفوري صاحب التحفة
Sheikh
Abu al-Ala Muhammad Abdurrahman ibn Abdurrahim al-Mubarakfuri (1283-1353 AH / 1860-1935 CE) was an Indian hadith scholar from Mubarakpur, Uttar Pradesh. He is best known for his monumental work Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi bi-Sharh Jami' at-Tirmidhi (The Gift of the Resolute: Commentary on the Jami' of at-Tirmidhi), the most comprehensive commentary on Sunan at-Tirmidhi.
Al-Mubarakfuri was associated with the Ahl al-Hadith movement in India, which emphasized direct derivation of rulings from hadith texts rather than adherence to a particular legal school. He studied under the scholars of the Indian hadith tradition and dedicated his scholarly life to the commentary on at-Tirmidhi's collection.
Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi is an extensive work in approximately ten volumes that provides detailed explanations of each hadith in Sunan at-Tirmidhi, including technical analysis of the narrators, comparative jurisprudential discussions, and at-Tirmidhi's own comments on each hadith. The commentary draws on a wide range of earlier scholarship and is considered one of the most important reference works for understanding the hadiths in at-Tirmidhi's collection. Its depth and comprehensiveness made it the standard reference commentary on Sunan at-Tirmidhi.
Al-Mubarakfuri also authored Sirat ar-Rasul (a Seerah work) and other works. He taught at Jamia Salafiyya in Varanasi, India. He passed away in Mubarakpur in 1353 AH. His Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi remains his most significant contribution and a major reference in hadith scholarship.
