Ali Muhyi ad-Din al-Qaradaghi (b. 1369 AH / 1949 CE) is a Kurdish Islamic scholar from Qaradagh in Iraqi Kurdistan who has become one of the most prominent scholars of Islamic economics and finance globally. He serves as the Secretary General of the International Union of Muslim Scholars.
Al-Qaradaghi earned his doctorate from the University of Cairo and studied under major scholars including Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, under whose influence he developed his scholarly orientation combining traditional Islamic jurisprudence with engagement with contemporary economic and social questions.
He is a prolific author on Islamic finance, jurisprudence, and contemporary fiqh issues, authoring dozens of books. His works on Islamic banking, insurance, investment, and financial instruments have made him one of the leading scholarly references for Islamic finance practitioners and institutions. He serves on the Sharia supervisory boards of numerous Islamic financial institutions.
Al-Qaradaghi is known for his measured, evidence-based approach to contemporary juristic questions, seeking to apply the principles of the four Sunni legal schools to modern economic realities. His expertise spans traditional Hanbali jurisprudence, comparative Islamic law, and the contemporary discipline of Islamic finance.
