Biography

Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Abi Bakr al-Ansari al-Qurtubi al-Maliki was born in Cordoba, Al-Andalus, and later settled in Egypt. His al-Jami' li-Ahkam al-Quran (Comprehensive Collection of Quranic Legal Rulings), known as Tafsir al-Qurtubi, is a 20-volume Quranic commentary focusing on extracting legal rulings from each verse. It is one of the most referenced classical tafsir works. He also wrote al-Tadhkirah fi Ahwal al-Mawta wa-Umur al-Akhirah (an important eschatological work). He was known for his piety and asceticism. He died in Munya Bani Khasib, Egypt, in 671 AH.
