Biography

Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Tha'labi (350–427 AH / 960–1035 CE) was a major Quran commentator of the 5th century AH based in Nishapur. His al-Kashf wa al-Bayan 'an Tafsir al-Quran (The Revelation and Clarification Concerning the Interpretation of the Quran) is a large early tafsir that became a source for later commentators. He is also known for Ara'is al-Majalis (known in English as Lives of the Prophets), a compilation of stories about Quranic figures. His tafsir quotes many early authorities and is a valuable source for the history of Quranic interpretation.
