Biography
Ahmad ibn Yahya al-Wansharisi (834–914 AH / 1430–1508 CE) was the most important Maliki jurist of 9th-century AH Morocco. His monumental work al-Mi'yar al-Mu'rib wa al-Jami' al-Mughrib is the most comprehensive collection of Maliki fatwas (legal opinions) ever assembled, spanning 13 volumes and covering centuries of legal opinions from scholars across al-Andalus, North Africa, and the Islamic West. It remains an invaluable source for Maliki legal history. He also played a crucial role in encouraging Muslims in Granada to resist religious persecution under Spanish Christian rule rather than comply with demands to outwardly practice Christianity.
