Ammar ibn Yasir al-Ansi al-Makhzumi (by walaa), may Allah be pleased with him, was among the very first converts to Islam and one of the most severely persecuted of the early Muslims. His father Yasir and his mother Sumayya were among the earliest believers, and his mother became Islam's first martyr when she was killed by Abu Jahl for refusing to renounce her faith. Ammar himself was subjected to torture and compelled to utter words of disbelief while his heart remained firm — an incident that became the context for the Quranic verse permitting outward compliance under extreme duress while preserving inner faith. The Prophet ﷺ declared: 'Ammar is filled with faith from his head to his feet; faith has been mixed with his very flesh and blood.' He also said: 'The unjust group shall kill Ammar.' This prophecy was fulfilled at the Battle of Siffin (37 AH) when he was killed fighting on the side of Ali ibn Abi Talib at an age of approximately 90 years. His death was taken as confirmation by many that Ali's side was in the right. He narrated hadiths covering prayer (including the narration on tayammum), personal conduct, and faith. His narrations appear in all six major collections.
