عمار بن ياسر
Ammar ibn Yasir (570-657 CE) was among the earliest converts to Islam and a member of the first family to suffer martyrdom for the faith. His father Yasir and his mother Sumayyah were brutally tortured by the Quraysh for their belief, and Sumayyah became the first martyr in Islam when Abu Jahl killed her with a spear. The Prophet, witnessing their suffering, consoled the family with the words: 'Patience, O family of Yasir, for your destination is Paradise.'
Ammar himself endured severe torture, including being held under burning sand and submerged in water. Under extreme duress, he was forced to utter words of disbelief, but the Prophet reassured him that his heart was full of faith and that he had done no wrong. This incident is connected to the revelation of the Quranic verse permitting speech under coercion while the heart remains at peace with faith (16:106).
Ammar remained a devoted companion throughout the Prophet's life and the caliphates that followed. He supported Ali ibn Abi Talib and fought at the Battle of Siffin in 37 AH (657 CE), where he was martyred at approximately eighty-seven years of age. The Prophet had foretold his death, saying that the transgressing party would kill Ammar, a hadith recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim that became a significant point of reference in early Islamic political history.
