Amr ibn al-Sharid (or Amr ibn Sharid al-Thaqafi) was an early narrator who transmitted hadith with a chain traceable to his father al-Sharid ibn Suwayd al-Thaqafi (RA), a companion of the Prophet ﷺ. Al-Sharid (RA) was a companion from the Thaqif tribe who narrated directly from the Prophet ﷺ on matters including poetry, proper conduct, and the characteristics of the believers. Amr transmitted his father's narrations faithfully, serving as an important link between the companion generation and the Tabi'in. Among the well-known hadiths narrated through this chain is a report about the Prophet ﷺ requesting that al-Sharid recite poetry from Umayyah ibn Abi al-Salt, with the Prophet ﷺ appreciating the moral content of some pre-Islamic verses. Hadith scholars regarded Amr ibn al-Sharid as a reliable narrator and his transmissions appear in the Sunan collections of Abu Dawud, al-Nasa'i, and al-Tirmidhi. He was part of the scholarly environment of the Hijaz and played a modest but genuine role in preserving prophetic narrations. His significance lies in completing the chain of transmission from his father al-Sharid, ensuring that the companion's direct narrations from the Prophet ﷺ were accurately preserved and transmitted to the broader scholarly community of the following generation.
