Amr ibn Yahya ibn Umara al-Mazini al-Ansari was a Medinan Tabi'i scholar of the second generation and a descendant of the companion Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him. He transmitted hadith from his father Yahya ibn Umara, who narrated from his grandfather Abu Sa'id al-Khudri. Amr is best known for his transmission of the important hadith on wudu from his father, which became one of the primary textual sources for the prohibition against wudu from vessels of gold and silver, and the proper method of washing the arms in ablution. His chain — Amr ibn Yahya from his father from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri — became one of the foundational chains in Medinan hadith transmission and is relied upon in Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and other major collections. Hadith scholars regarded him as trustworthy and precise. His narrations span topics of purity, prayer, and prophetic conduct. He was associated with the scholarly circles of Medina in the early second century AH and represents the continuity of prophetic knowledge through Medinan family chains of transmission.
