Abu Ma'mar, whose name was Abdullah ibn Sakhbarah, was a Tabi'i scholar from Kufa who narrated from companions of the Prophet ﷺ including Abdullah ibn Masud and others. He was a student of the Kufan scholarly tradition and transmitted hadiths on Quranic recitation and prayer. He is particularly associated with narrations on the correct recitation of the Quran and the importance of learning it from those who received it directly. He was regarded as a reliable narrator by hadith scholars. Among his notable contributions is his transmission of narrations from Abdullah ibn Masud on Quranic matters — particularly on the recitation of certain letters and words in the Quran — which are important for the science of Quranic readings (qira'at). His narrations appear in Sahih al-Bukhari and the major Sunan collections. He represents the Kufan scholarly tradition's role in preserving the recitation and hadith knowledge of Abdullah ibn Masud, one of the four companions named by the Prophet as authorities on the Quran.
