رضي الدين الأسترآباذي
Radiy ad-Din Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Astarabadhi (d. 688 AH / 1289 CE) was a Persian grammarian who produced two of the most analytically rigorous commentaries in the Arabic grammatical tradition. Born in Astarabad in northern Persia, little is known about his early life, but his works reveal a scholar of exceptional precision and depth. His birth date is not recorded.
Al-Astarabadhi's two masterworks are his commentary on Ibn al-Hajib's al-Kafiyah (on Arabic syntax) and his commentary on Ibn al-Hajib's ash-Shafiyah (on Arabic morphology). These commentaries go far beyond mere explanation of the original texts; they engage deeply with the theoretical foundations of Arabic grammar, critically evaluate competing positions from the Basra and Kufa schools, and offer original insights that advance the discipline. His commentary on the Kafiyah is considered one of the most comprehensive and intellectually demanding works on Arabic syntax, while his commentary on the Shafiyah is similarly regarded as the pinnacle of morphological analysis.
Al-Astarabadhi's approach is characterized by logical rigor, systematic treatment of grammatical problems, and a willingness to challenge established authorities when the evidence warrants it. He died in approximately 688 AH (1289 CE). His commentaries have been studied for centuries in advanced Arabic grammar curricula and continue to be valued by scholars for their depth of analysis and theoretical sophistication.
