Ata' ibn Yasar al-Hilali was a distinguished Tabi'i scholar of Medina who devoted his life to the transmission of hadith and Islamic knowledge. He was the freed slave (mawla) of Maymuna bint al-Harith, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, which gave him close access to the prophetic household and its narrations. He narrated extensively from major companions including Abu Hurayra, Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, Ibn Abbas, A'ishah, and many others, may Allah be pleased with them all. He was particularly noted for his precise transmission and his reliability as a narrator. His brother Sulayman ibn Yasar was one of the seven great Medinan jurists (al-Fuqaha' al-Sab'ah), and Ata' was himself a major figure in Medinan scholarly circles. He narrated hadiths on worship, ethics, the Day of Judgment, and prophetic conduct, and was praised by scholars of both his generation and those that followed for his accuracy, piety, and sound character. He passed away around 103 AH. His narrations appear in all six major hadith collections and form an important strand in the chains of transmission that run through Medina.
