كنعان ابن نوح
Canaan (Kan'an) was a son of Prophet Nuh AS who refused to board the ark and was drowned in the flood. His story in the Quran (Surah Hud 11:42-46) is one of the most emotionally affecting passages in the entire scripture. As the flood waters rose and the ark set sail, Nuh AS called out to his son who had taken refuge on a mountain: 'O my son, come aboard with us and be not with the disbelievers.' His son replied: 'I will take refuge on a mountain to protect me from the water.' Nuh said: 'There is no protector today from the decree of Allah, except for whom He gives mercy.' A wave came between them, and he was among the drowned. Nuh then called upon his Lord in anguish: 'My Lord, indeed my son is of my family, and indeed Your promise is true, and You are the most just of judges.' Allah responded with one of the most profound statements in the Quran on the limits of family ties in the sight of Allah: 'O Nuh, indeed he is not of your family; indeed, he is of unrighteous conduct' (Surah Hud 11:46). The son's unbelief placed him outside the definition of Nuh's family in the religious and ultimate sense, despite the biological bond. Nuh accepted this, sought forgiveness, and continued his mission. This story is the Quran's clearest statement that parentage and family love cannot override the divine criterion of faith and righteousness, and that prophets themselves are not exempted from this universal law.
