Hamzah al-Zayyat

Hamzah ibn Habib al-Zayyat al-Kufi (80-156H) was one of the Seven Canonical Reciters, representing Kufa alongside Asim. He was a student of al-A'mash and Ja'far al-Sadiq among others, and transmitted the recitation from Humran ibn A'yan. Known for his strict elongations (madd) and precise articulation points, his recitation was transmitted through Khalaf and Khallad. Despite being a merchant (al-Zayyat = oil merchant), he was renowned for asceticism and worship. Imam Ahmad praised his recitation highly.
