Abdullah ibn Dinar al-Madani was a Tabi'i hadith scholar and a freed slave (mawla) of Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Having grown up in the household of Ibn Umar and served him closely, he became one of the most reliable transmitters of Ibn Umar's vast hadith corpus. His narrations from Ibn Umar appear prominently in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, and scholars of hadith criticism consistently rated him as thiqa (trustworthy) and dabut (precise). Imam Malik ibn Anas narrated from him extensively, and his reports form an important part of the Muwatta. He also narrated from Anas ibn Malik and other Companions. The chains running from Malik from Abdullah ibn Dinar from Ibn Umar are among the well-known Medinan transmission routes preserved in the major collections. He was based in Medina throughout his scholarly career and was deeply embedded in the circle of scholars who preserved the Sunnah in that city. He passed away around 127 AH and is regarded as an authoritative and trustworthy link between the Companion generation and the scholars of the second century of Islam.
