Biography

Ali ibn Muhammad al-Qattan al-Fasi (562–628 AH / 1150–1231 CE) was the foremost Maliki hadith critic of the Islamic West in the 7th century AH. His Bayan al-Wahm wa al-Iham is a critique of hadith evaluations in Ibn al-Hazm's and al-Hazimi's works, correcting what he saw as errors in their judgment. He also wrote al-Iqtinah' fi Ahkam al-Istibra', demonstrating mastery of both Maliki fiqh and hadith criticism. He represents the Maliki tradition's serious engagement with hadith methodology.
