أبو القاسم حمزة الكناني
Imam
Abu al-Qasim Hamzah ibn Yusuf al-Hamdhani al-Kinani as-Sahmi (323-419 AH / 935-1028 CE) was a hadith scholar and historian from Jurjan (modern Gorgan, Iran). Born in Jurjan, he traveled extensively to study hadith under major scholars across the Muslim world before returning to settle in his home city.
As-Sahmi's most important work is Tarikh Jurjan (The History of Jurjan), a comprehensive biographical dictionary of scholars from the city of Jurjan and those who visited it. This work is one of the most valuable early examples of local scholarly biography (tarikh madina) in Islamic literature, documenting hundreds of scholars connected to the city, their chains of transmission, and their scholarly activities. It is an important source for the intellectual history of Khurasan in the early Islamic centuries.
He also authored works in the hadith sciences, including collections of narrations from the scholars of his region. As-Sahmi was a careful transmitter of hadith and his narrations are preserved in the chains of later compilations.
Tarikh Jurjan is particularly notable as a document of the thriving scholarly life in the cities of Khurasan during the classical Islamic period. It provides information about many scholars who are not mentioned in the major biographical dictionaries focused on more prominent centers like Baghdad and Basra. As-Sahmi passed away in Jurjan in approximately 419 AH, leaving behind a valuable historical record of his city's scholarly community.
